Can I Perform My Own Laptop Hard Drive Repair?

Over the last five to ten years, laptops have completed their transformation from exotic pieces of high-end technology to common household objects, as ubiquitous as a Starbucks double latte.

No longer does a laptop case in one’s hand imply that this person is an important banking executive or lawyer; it is just as likely that he or she is an impoverished art student headed to class.

Unfortunately, these little electronic miracles that have become so necessary to business and academic survival still break down with alarming regularity. If your laptop should experience the “blue screen of death”, the first question you might ask is can you perform your own laptop hard drive repair?

Laptops are becoming increasingly complex and powerful as technology moves forward. They also seem to get smaller and smaller each year. While almost anyone can replace the battery, performing a laptop hard drive repair can be an altogether different matter.

The first factor to take into consideration is your overall level of comfort in dealing with technology. If you consider replacing a leaky washer in your kitchen faucet to be beyond your level of technical competency, a trip to the local computer repair shop would be strongly suggested.

If, however, you have no problem popping the case on your desktop computer and adding an extra CD drive, performing a laptop hard drive repair is certainly going to be within the realm of possibility for you.

The most important thing you will need to begin to undertake your laptop hard drive repair is a proper tool kit. Forget about the wrench and screwdriver set you used to fix your car last week; laptop work will require a good set of jeweler’s screwdrivers and, possibly, a pair of small needle-nosed pliers to boot.

Any small set of screwdrivers recommended for computer repair should do fine. If you find that your laptop requires non-standard tools to open, it probably means that the manufacturer is trying to discourage you from getting into the case, possibly for good reason. In this case it is definitely wise to consult with a professional before continuing.

If you are lucky, the hard drive will be accessible through a separate removable cover on the bottom of the laptop. If not, you will probably need to remove the entire bottom plate of the casing to get to it.

Additional steps to access and remove the drive will vary widely from one manufacturer to another. Be careful not to bend anything during the process of removal…once again, if it is too difficult to get out, seek professional advice.

Once removal is accomplished, inserting a replacement drive and reassembling the case should be an easy matter. Reboot the machine using the recovery disk provided by the manufacturer, or choose the reinstall to factory settings option upon startup and your laptop hard drive repair will be successfully completed.
